The jewel in the crown of the Valley of the Cats. With a high density of these magnificent cats, with patience and persistence, the chances are good of a glimpse during a visit of 3 days or more.

Present in several locations in the Valley and often raids Tibetan yak herders’ homes in the summer when they move their yak up to the higher elevations and leave their properties unattended.

Himalayan Marmot (Marmota himalayana) 喜马拉雅旱獭
Common in the valley from late March to November. Hibernates in the depths of winter. The marmot’s alarm call can be an indicator that a predator is around, so listen carefully and look closely if you hear them.

Look for this bird along the river. An accomplished diver.

Very common in the Valley. Often seen in large groups on either side of the tracks. Listen for its distinctive call in the early morning and late afternoon.

Buff-throated (Monal) Partridge 黄喉雉鹑
Common in the wooded areas of the Valley. Listen for its distinctive call early morning. Often in pairs or small groups on the ground.

Tibetan Partridge 高原山鹑
Common in the Valley, often close to human habitation. Their rasping, almost Corncrake-like calls are a good indicator of their presence. Can be tame.

Himalayan Griffon Vulture 高山兀鹫
Very common in the Valley and can be a good indicator of a recent kill by a large predator. Look for them circling in the mid-mornings or resting on cliff edges.

Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture) 胡兀鹫
Common in the Valley. Look for them circling or patrolling the higher ridges. The distinctive tail helps to separate this from the Himalayan Griffon Vulture at long distances.
